IMTA and the Future of Aquaculture in the United States

Development of the aquaculture industry in the United States has been slow compared to many countries in the world. In part this is due to the heightened awareness of environmental issues by American consumers. A new type of aquaculture called Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) uses ecosystem-based concepts to improve efficiency by producing several species of plants and animals in a single system that share the same recirculated water.
A group of scientists and engineers at FAU Harbor Branch are currently developing and testing a land-based IMTA system that is intended to push the envelope of aquaculture science. This lecture will provide an update on the project: what we have learned so far and how we hope it will impact the aquaculture industry in Florida and the United States. Dr. Paul Wills presents his own findings as well as those from collaborating FAU Harbor Branch scientists Dr. Susan Laramore and Dr. Dennis Hanisak.
