Liz, the picture is deleted. I may crop you out and re-upload it because I want to show Glenn giving his talk. It was pretty interesting when he suggested the dock workers shut down the docks for a period of time as a wake-up call for the island, wasn't it?
HI Liz,
I am experimenting with possible foods I can raise without continuing to use commercial feed. I am starting with raising soldier fly larvae (they are in a bio-pod and compost our food scraps). I am harvseting about 1 pound of larvae every 2 or 3 days. I then freeze them in bulk and then dry them in my screen house (a bit smelly). The fish don't seem to take them fresh yet and they sink fast, when dry they don't sink but the fish still haven't gone for them. Now I grind them and the catfish go nuts for them. My next idea is to grind them in a meat grinder along with the azolla I grow and dry that as a pelleted food and see how popular that is in the pond. I think the tilipia are eating the ground up dried flies but it is hard to see exactly what they are eating, they do go for the azolla. The soldier fly larvae is very high in protein and they are already on the island. They are not disease carring flies or annoying. I have also heard that moringa is a good fish food and I know it grows well in captain cook and we know some folks here in puna with it. We are hoping to get some plants and try it out.
