Aquaponics headed into uncharted waters when a NOAA Ship left the port of Honolulu Wednesday, September 1, 2010, carrying an experimental portable system on deck. The research vessel Ka’imimoana will attempt to grow food, and handle some of its organic waste with the system, called an Aquaport.
The idea to use aquaponics at sea came from the ship’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Helen Ballantyne.
I love it when science has a real victory. Sometimes scientific research results in tiny pieces of information that are largely unusable by the public. I think this story illustrates a great collaboration between aquaculture and genetic research---finding that a certain genetic code of parent fish can eliminate a disease through immunity to that disease, in their offspring. I usually say this word with a "k" on the end, as in "ick"...similar to "eewwww" but in this case, I am referring to Ichthyophthirius, a parisitic "white-spot" disease that affects home aquarium lovers and fish farmers. But wait...there may be good news today! It appears that a vaccine may be near to help everyone with this problem. Adobe has released the cloud-based (online) version of their famous "Photoshop" software. You just need to sign up for an account--- upload your pictures and you get some pretty great editing tools.

Ran across this interesting project from the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California. The "Seafood of the Future" site contains several links of value...I especially liked seeing their recommendations for consumers. I would've liked to see more effort towards seafood labeling, but overall it's worth a look.

I just watched this older youtube video again, now that I'm a fervent advocate of aquaculture, aquaponics and feeding the planet. This young boy reminds me of Benny Ron....lots of passion. The singing is superb....the message is priceless.
In Mesa, Az, this guy took his old, in-ground swimming pool and turned it into a permaculture system that is truly amazing. He even kept a diary which is available on the website.
I ran across this story today that got me thinking... how can anyone "rent" the ocean? Apparently Vietnam is capitalizing on a global resource by renting out space in the sea. Hmmmm.... I think I will claim all of the water around Hawaii and rent it out....Who's my first renter? Beachfront view. Low tides. Lifeguards optional. (utilities not included)
I enjoyed this story about a recent harvest of 3,000 lbs of farmed shrimp...most notably because it's from a gulf coast state, but also because I love eating shrimp and do not want them to disappear from my supermarket. WIsh I had room in my condo for a shrimp raceway farm like this one...
