Associate Director – Aquaculture Research Institute
February 2nd, 2010
Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI)
Associate Director, half time (Professional Staff)
The Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI) seeks an aquaculture specialist for the exciting and challenging position of Associate Director. The successful candidate will plan, coordinate and administer the strategic plan of the ARI and ensure that the ARI maintains a high profile with stakeholder groups in Maine.
The Associate Director will work with the Director and Research Coordinator to ensure the daily functioning of the ARI. Tasks will include:
Coordination and publication of the ARI’s annual report
Preparation of budget requests
Liaison between the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR), Aquaculture Research Center (ARC), the Darling Marine Center (DMC) and the Director’s office in regard to the management of the ARI’s resources
Maintenance of the ARI records
Maintenance of the ARI’s Website and publications
Oversight of communication between the Health and Safety Department and the ARI’s staff, students, and faculty members
Organize the communications within the University on behalf of the ARI
Organization of the ARI’s annual science meeting for stakeholders
The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the Director of the ARI, representatives of the aquaculture industry in Maine and the Maine extension program. They will be responsible for developing the outreach and communication strategy, including oversight of the ARI website. It is hoped that the successful candidate will contribute one undergraduate introductory level course in aquaculture. The Associate Directorship is a half time position and the successful candidate will be appointed at a level comparable with an Associate Professor. It is hoped that the successful candidate will also seek a research appointment in a suitable academic department to pursue a research program in an aquaculture related field using grant funding in order to support a full time position.
If the successful candidate takes up the opportunity to pursue a research appointment in addition to the Associate Directorship, their academic home will be dependent upon the research field they are interested in, but it could be within the School of Marine Sciences, or one of the following Departments: the School of Biology and Ecology; Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology; or Animal and Veterinary Sciences (although this is by no means an exclusive list). We propose to base the successful candidate either at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, Maine or at the University of Maine, Orono campus.
Applications should comprise a cover letter and full CV including employment history, positions of responsibility, research output and a statement of employment and / or research goals that demonstrate commitment to interdisciplinary aquaculture collaboration, as well as a list of three references from whom we may solicit further details. Send the entire submission as a single pdf file to Sue Thibodeau (Susanne.Thibodeau@umit.maine.edu) or mail to her at 360 Aubert Hall, Orono, Maine 04469. We encourage interested parties to contact the Director of the Aquaculture Research Institute, Prof. Ian Bricknell (ian.bricknell@umit.maine.edu). Review of applications will commence immediately and will continue until a suitable pool is identified.
