Aquaculture Mapping with Google

One of the earliest features we added to the AquacultureHub system was this Google map backed by our database of Aquaculture Resources around the world. As our dataset has grown we are looking at the various alternatives to make sure that the map plugin keeps working and the data stays up to date, as well as providing the end user with useful functionality.
The same back end data-set is used by our mobile apps. The data set is currently a Google Spreadsheet and is accessed via the Google Documents API. See the iphone group for more details on our mobile system.

Okay, so the new map with clusters seems to be working well. The old map is kind of funky now we have more data in the spreadsheet, so I've updated the link in the intro section about, and here is a screen shot of the old map for nostalgia's sake :-)

I just had some success increasing the scalability of the map by using the Google MarkerClusterer javascript library. Unfortunately I can't embed an iframe in this comment for an interactive example so for the moment here is a static image:

I just noticed the Google Maps Data API in the Google Labs. In principle this would allow us to remove the Google Spreadsheet component in our existing setup, although it's not immediately clear whether we would lose more functionality than we would gain. We might get better search, but we might lose the ease with which we can create an Excel file backup ...
