Participants from the Marine Fish Aquaculture Scoping Workshop invite marine finfish aquaculturists to complete an on-line marine foodfish survey. The goal of the survey is to compile general knowledge of 17 food fish species in order to choose the best options for domestic expansion of non-salmonid marine finfish aquaculture in the United States. The survey results will be compiled into a report that will be made available electronically through many sources. These results will assist aquaculture funding agencies and sponsors, researchers, and corporations with knowledge to expand onshore and offshore aquaculture ventures that will reduce the seafood trade deficit and stimulate economic growth of U.S. aquaculture. Survey participants will have access to a list of 17 marine fish species. Participants should complete a survey for each fish species for which they have expertise. For example, if a participant has knowledge to share for four species, the survey will need to be completed four times. Each species’ survey has 78 questions and will require about 15 minutes to complete. To access the survey, click on: http://www.fau.edu/hboi/newsroom/archives/marinefinfishsurvey2017-2018.php. The survey will remain open for comment until January 15, 2018. The Marine Fish Aquaculture Scoping Workshop was co-hosted by Florida Atlantic University-Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (FAU-HBOI), U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-Office of Aquaculture during March 2017 at FAU-HBOI. For information about the Workshop, please contact Dr. Megan Davis, Associate Executive Director, Academic Affairs & Economic Development, FAU-HBOI, at 772-242-2298 or mdavi105@fau.edu.
AwF Volunteer Survey to update datatag:www.aquaculturehub.org,2014-02-13:4021269:Topic:1496842014-02-13T23:48:00.685ZRoy Palmerhttp://www.aquaculturehub.org/profile/RoyPalmer

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are increasingly used to rear aquatic animals – as this use increases so does the potential for loss from disease. Unfortunately, few drugs are presently approved in the U.S. for use in RAS to control disease. This survey seeks to develop information that will make it easier for safe and effective drugs to be approved for use in RAS.

As part of the drug approval process, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration assesses not only the efficacy of the drug for its intended purpose, but also its potential direct and indirect effects on the treated animals and the environment. There is little information currently available that summarizes how the various types of RAS are actually operated and the conditions under which a drug might be applied in those RAS. There is even less information available on how drugs might affect RAS biofilter operation and function; this information is important for determining the fate of drugs within RAS facilities, their potential effects on water quality, and for evaluating how much of the drugs might be released in RAS effluents. The lack of this broad baseline information on RAS and biofilters complicates the FDA’s assessments of potential risks to both the treated animal and the environment. Viterbo University (La Crosse, Wisconsin) developed this survey to describe current RAS operations and procedures, which, when combined with other drug effects information, will help inform the decisions FDA makes in regards to the approval of drugs to control disease in animals reared in RAS.

THE USE OF SMALL-SCALE RECIRCULATING AQUACULTURE SYSTEMS AND
AQUAPONICS IN EXTENSION AND EDUCATION
Since opening it’s doors in 2003, the Georgia Center for Aquaculture Development (GCAD) at Fort Valley State University has used a variety of different small-scale recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and aquaponic units to teach basic aquaculture techniques. Potential aquaculture producers learn about basic aquaculture principles with the aid of 10 different RAS located in 3 on-campus greenhouses. The basics of aquaponics are also demonstrated with the use of floating bed, NFT and vertical units associated with the RAS. The species reared in the different RAS have included shrimp, freshwater prawns, three species of tilapia, koi, channel catfish, hybrid bream, largemouth bass, copper nose bream and hybrid striped bass. Over 30 types of herbs and vegetables have been grown in the aquaponic units.
Each year at least six aquaculture workshops or presentations are held at FVSU on a variety of subjects including water quality, best management practices, fish health, aquaponics and marketing. At each workshop time is spent in the greenhouse examining the different types and components of the RAS and aquaponic units. One-on-one tours are given throughout the year to help prospective growers learn about RAS and aquaponics. Presentations are also given throughout the state about RAS technology.
We also conduct outreach to schools in surrounding counties with fish, prawn and aquaponics exhibits. At the FVSU building at the SUNBELT Expo we now have a permanent RAS and aquaponic exhibit.
Citizens from all over the state routinely come to workshops now being held in Fort Valley at the GCAD. To date over 5,000 Georgians have toured the GCAD greenhouse aquaculture facilities. Of these visitors to the aquaculture facilities, 3,400 have been students, kindergartners to high school age, the vast majority African-American. Ten FVSU students have worked with the aquaculture program and received extensive training to date.
Additional RAS are being constructed in the new aquaculture facilities off campus in the new farm area. A USDA capacity building grant supports the building of five 120 by 35 foot greenhouses, 20 ponds, 2 storage buildings and an office area. The five greenhouses have been erected and are currently being equipped with different RAS, raceways, aeration systems, and plumbing. A variety of new RAS technology will be demonstrated in this area.
The impact of the GCAD greenhouses with the different RAS fish species, shrimp and prawns on Georgia citizens has been great. Prospective producers have learned that they do not need a large amount of acreage to produce fish with the use of RAS and the ability to grow herbs and vegetables with aquaponics provides additional cash flow. The ability of youth to have “hands on” experience with fish and prawns and to see the RAS production systems as an alternate enterprise, is an eye opening experience whether they are kindergartners or high school age.
