Dr. Wilson Lennard from Australia teaches workshops regularly with Dr. Rakocy, has designed, constructed, and is running and managing Australia’s first truly Aquaponic fish and plant culture, commercial scale system. The system has run for approximately 18 months, culturing Australian Murray Cod and a variety of herb plant species. Experience with this system has allowed the establishment of skills and experience in:

• Aquaponic system design
• Aquaponic system construction
• System component design
• System component construction
• Aquaponic system management principles/methodologies

Principally, this experience has allowed the development of management methodologies that allow the nutrient profile generated by the fish component to be completely matched to the requirements of the specific plant(s) being cultured.

Dr. James Rakocy is the Director of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Agricultural Experiment Station and a Research Professor of Aquaculture. He obtained his PhD in aquaculture from Auburn University in 1980 and has been at UVI since then. His research has concentrated on the development of production systems for tilapia that conserve and reuse water and recycle nutrients. He and his colleagues have developed aquaponic and biofloc systems, which intensify production and utilize dissolved nutrients for hydroponic vegetable production and solid organic waste for the production of field crops. Since 1999 the UVI Aquaculture program has offered an International Course on Aquaponics and Tilapia Aquaculture. The course has attracted 510 participants from 40 states, five U.S. territories, and 52 other countries and foreign territories.

Benny, I will not be able to attend the conference as I will be deep into construction of a new, large aquaponic farm.
