Aquaponics Workshop

Aquaponics 101

A workshop series offered by the DSU Cooperative Extension Aquaculture Technical Assistance and Outreach Program

Come join us as we explore aquaponics, the integration of aquaculture and hydroponics.  The primary goal of the Aquaponics 101 workshop series is to help new and prospective aquaculture producers gain the practical knowledge and skills they will need to be successful in aquaponics.  We will offer a total of nine sessions covering everything from system design to feeding to processing.  Make plans to attend one or all of this year’s classes.  Unless otherwise noted, classes will begin at 4 PM in the DSU aquaponics greenhouse.

  • ·       Feeds and Feeding

May 25, 2017

Ensuring that your fish have enough of the right kind of food is essential.  Learn about feed types, and how to sample fish to calculate feeding rates and feed conversion ratios.

  • ·       Plants and Plant Management

June 15, 2017

This month, we will discuss planting, seed germination, transplanting, and growing media selection.

  • ·       Water Quality

July 20, 2017

Learn the basics of water quality testing and the important role this plays in keeping your fish and plants healthy.

  • ·       Plant Pests and Diseases

August 17, 2017

Plants can’t grow properly when fighting pests, facing nutritional deficiencies or are infected with a disease.  We will examine common pests, plant health issues and appropriate management options.

  • ·       Fish Health Management

September 21, 2017

Healthy fish eat better and grow faster.  We will discuss options to help maintain your fishes’ health, signs of trouble, and what to do when you have problems.

  • ·       Harvesting and Processing

October 19, 2017

Like other meat products, seafood must be properly slaughtered and handled for the finished product to be safe and wholesome.  Learn about maintaining food safety from the tank to the plate.

Come and join us for one or all of the classes.  Classes are FREE, but pre-registration is required.  Call (302) 857-6456 or send an e-mail todmcintosh@desu.edu today to reserve your space!
